For the Victims of the Earthquake

Dear LIA Kelapa Gadingers,

The earthquake happened last Thursday put us in a shock mode not only for the people of Sumatra but also for us, the entire nation. Our brothers and sisters in Padang regions, part of Jambi and neighboring areas such as Mentawai and others suffered the devastation effect of the 7.6 shake on the Richter scale. They need our help and even though it's not going to be enough for all of them, it is an obligation for each and everyone of us to show our concern by lending our hand to help.

For this purpose, YAYASAN LIA's chairman of the board, ibu Conny Semiawan has instructed all LIA outlets in more than 15 provinces to gather fund that is going to be distributed to the areas that are affected by the disaster. Your contribution in the form of money is expected to be collected from Monday, October 5 till Saturday, October 10, 2009. Please contact your teacher for details.

All of your contribution is to be announced at the end of the collection period on the posters you can find in all LIA branches. We will post the result in this blog also.

Last but not least, no contribution is ever too small. Your participation is needed by the victims there as well as our continuous prayer.

Green Here and There

It really made us proud when the people from Quality Control noticed our effort to make the learning areas green by putting more plants. It's literally plants, plants and plants everywhere! It is actually the idea from our branch manager Mr. Ign. Aristiyono.

Coming from Jogja branch where plants are easy to find and knowing the benefit of putting some plants indoor for the change of oxygen etc., he decided that we have to have our own plants. We used to rent the plants. In other words, now that we have our own plants, the building is greener and healthier. The economical 'side effect' is just a fringe benefit. ;)

No wonder the QC people considered it an achievement, right?

A Little Something to Share from the Earthquake Day

Some students went straight home. Some made phone calls with the teachers' help.

Some students were waiting for their parents/ family to pick them up.

Ms. Ester calmed the students by chatting with them. :)

Quality Control Visit

We have visits from the Quality Control Sub Directorate every year. This year they came during the first week of the fasting month. During the visit, we presented our facilities, human resources data and other supporting factors such as achievements and students' activities.

The agenda also included impromptu visits to classes and observed some teachers to collect data whether they have taught their classes based on our standard or not. Basically, there are three factors the observers would like to see: the interaction among students, teacher talk time and the questioning techniques.

On the second day of the visit, the people from the Sub Directorate provided a list that informs us the factors that become our strength and other factors that will become our next agenda in order to improve our academic quality and, most importantly, our service.

Due to the large earthquake, 7.3 SR as a matter of fact, all class sessions for 15.00 - 17.00 slot is OFF for the day. The make-up class schedule is to be decided later with your class teacher. The 17.00 - 19.00 slot commences..

For safety reason, please us the stairs and follow your teacher's instructions should the earthquake re-occur.

Ta'jil for Students

What's different every evening during the fasting month? The bell for the magrib prayer is exactly on the breaking the fast time and it's all done simultaneously.

Have you ever tried going to the 3rd floor during that time? NO? You're missing something then. :O Every fasting month, we provide ta'jil for LIA Kelapa Gadingers who fast. It usually consists of a warm glass of tea (refill-able, by the way) and a simple snack provided by LIA, teachers and sometimes from students or their parents.

Lebaran is still a long way. If you study in the 17.00 - 19.00 slot, be sure to visit the third floor. See you there! ;)

Student Competition in A Nut Shell

Last Sunday's branch final definitely is a milestone for us here in LIA Kelapa Gading. Over 60 participants from 4 different competition categories gave their best to earn the title of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winner. With the title, the winner receive prize money, trophy and merchandise. Cool eh? ;)

The registration desk already had its share of activities beginning at 8 AM. The buzz became even more hectic when parents, participants and the committee busied themselves. The newly arrived groups of participants received the snack boxes and mineral water from our sponsors. :~ Everywhere parents calmed their children before their performance while the committee was making their last minute preparation. They all were ready before the beautifully-designed main stage, obviously couldn't wait for another minute to perform.

After the opening ceremony at exactly 9 AM by LIA Kelapa Gading Branch Manager Mr. Ign. Aristiyono, Mr.Donny Djamhur divided the participants into 4 groups to go to 4 different venues to undergo the selection process. All teams of judges had difficulty to select the best candidate for each category. Indeed, it's a difficult assignment for them because whoever wins the 1st prize winner title is going to represent LIA Kelapa Gading in the National Student Competition in September.

After a 3-hour tiring-but-exciting program, everybody gathered in the main stage area anxiously waiting for the announcement of winners. While waiting for the judges to decide, the participants had the chance to get more prizes from us by answering several questions from Mr. Donny Djamhur. How exciting! Afterwards, the winners accepted their prizes followed with the closing remarks delivered by the Deputy Branch Manager, Mr. Jamali W which ended the day's program.

Our deepest gratitude to all our sponsors. We wish much success to the management of PT TIRTA INVESTAMA AQUA DANONE, PT TIRTA INVESTAMA VIT and last but not least to PT GADING PRIMA AUTOLAND. We have had a great 'journey' together as partners and, hopefully, in the many years to come.

Customer Service Training

As a regular program to increase employees knowledge on LIA products and their awareness to continuously improve their service, the customer service training session invited not only the frontliners but also the cleaning service staff, technicians and janitors.

Pak Haryanto explained about the customer questionnaire.

Different from the previous session in term 1 2009, the session began by having a group discussion about the basics of great customer service that any customer would have an everlasting memory of. Pak Haryanto, the new customer service staff, mentioned the extra service that LIA Kelapa Gading provides to cater the growing needs of quick and accessible information e.g. WIFI on the 3rd floor and LIA Kelapa Gading blogs and the existence of questionnaire to collect customer's input for the betterment of LIA service in general.

The group seriously discussed the items and so they became the winner. :z

Popular programs requested by customers were also the highlights of the session. The session ended after having group competition to test their knowledge of the points delivered previously.

Both teams were putting their effort together to be the best group in class.

Students' Competition: SAY

This category is for EA students levels Int 3 - Hi Int 4 and CV students levels 4 - 6. The participant must perform a creative presentation using posters, short play, songs, videos etc. in 5 - 7 minutes. Each participant chooses a topic out of the five topics provided for the presentation under a grand topic (theme) of "My World, My Dream". They are as follows:

1.Effective Future Community Leadership in the developing a Safer and Better World
2.Child’s Rights and Millennium Development Goals (point 7 & 8)
3.Changing Environmental Threats into Opportunities for a Better World
4.Strengthening family and community empowerment
5.Media as a Partner in Promoting and Protecting Child’s Rights

The classteacher will conduct the class selection and determine the class representative. All representatives for this category are going to be competing in the branch final on August 9, 2009. LIA Kelapa Gading 1st prize winner is eligible to join the national competition in September, 2009.

As the representative, he is then required to write an essay of 1000 - 1500 words based on the topic that is different from the chosen topic for the presentation. If he can make the selection of the big 20, he is going to be sent as an ambassador in the International Youth Forum in Jakarta in October, 2009. It's a prestigious event held as a result of a cooperation between Yayasan LIA and Yayasan Kesejahteraan Anak Indonesia. :Y

Students' Competition: SPEAK

The students from EA and CV programs could also participate in our celebration of LIA's 50th anniversary. The category for these two programs are SPEAK and SAY. In this posting, let's see what you need to do to join the SPEAK competition. ;)

This category is for EA students who are in Elementary 1 - Intermediate 2 levels. The same category could also be followed by CV students who are in levels 1 - 3. Though the two programs focus on different objectives, the committee consider this category as suitable since the nature of speech in this category is acceptable by both.

In SPEAK, a participant should present his speech based on a certain picture that is chosen by the committee. For classroom selection, the class teacher will provide the pics for the students to prepare before the day of selection. On the D-day, the teacher is going to choose a picture and the participant must be ready to present the short presentation based on the picture in 3 - 5 minutes.

After the class finds a representative, this person is going to participate in the branch final on August 9, 2009. His presentation, however, is going to be based on different set of pics. A picture is selected by the committee for a participant and he should (again) present facts, information or others based on the picture chosen. The winner of the branch selection will represent LIA Kelapa Gading in LIA National Students' Competition in September 2009.

Students' Competition: TESTIFY

The second competition category is TESTIFY. In this category, a participant must share the audience something that he loves. He could show a picture, a real object, a photograph or others and informs the audience facts, e.g. the reason why he shows the picture, where he bought the item, who it is from, etc. In order to do this, the participant is given 3 - 5 minutes to present his thoughts. This competition is for students in ET program levels 1 - 12.

Your class teacher will select a candidate from each ET class to participate in the branch final on August 9, 2009. The 1st winner of this category is eligible for joining LIA national students' competition in September 2009.

Students' Competition: TALK

This type of competition is for EC students who are in levels 1A till 6B. Everyone who joins in this category must prepare an Indonesian folktale and it must be told within 3 to 5-minute time.

The story can be modified, shorten or changed to suit the participant's style and preference. owever, the modification must not change the nature of the story and also its flow.

During the storytelling, the participant could wear a costume, present pictures, bring miniatures and improvise by using 'voices' as long as they support the story presentation. Remember to choose the right way to present the story so the audience is interested in the way of telling the story and they are not distracted by the participant's means to show his creativity.

Your class teacher will help with the class selection to determine one winner starting from July 17 - August 1, 2009. The representative of the class will have to present the story on August 9 to find the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winner of LIA Kelapa Gading branch. The first prize winner is going to represent LIA Kelapa Gading in LIA Students' Competition as a part of LIA 50th Anniversary celebration.

Malin Kundang is one of the most famous Indonesian folklores you can choose from.

Timun Mas is popular among Javanese children as an interesting folklore.

50th Anniversary Celebration

This coming September 7, 2009, YAYASAN LIA will be 50 years old. Fifty years! Yeah, we've been around for fifty years alright. And how does one celebrate his 50th birthday? By holding a party? By going on trips? By giving presents?

Weeeellll, you're not 100% wrong but you're not entirely right either. :O

To celebrate it, we've planned several events for the whole year. Til 2010 as a matter of fact! ;) The attention is not only on the celebration for the institution or its members, but also on the concept of developing and sharing with the big family of LIA and the people around the premises. You don't believe us? Let's take a look at the series of events we have and tell us what you think:

1. Research Colloquium held in Jogjakarta, June 25 - 26, 2009. International speakers and invitees were gathered in that one place with the underlying spirit of teaching professional development,
2. National Seminars held in 10 cities: Jogjakarta, Pontianak, Palembang, Makassar, Jakarta, Banjarmasin, Padang, Bandung, Surabaya and Kalimalang.
3. In relation with Corporate Social Responsibility, we hold Bhakti Sosial in two areas in Jakarta where we provide medicine and health services,
4. Sports competition among branches and LIA's partners,
5. Students' Competition,
6. Clients' Gathering when we invite our top notch clients from all over Indonesia who have been our loyal partners in holding top quality training not only for English but also for other professional development aspect such as: tourism, computer, accounting, etc.
